Mar Y Sol
In 2003, Laurel Brandstetter and the Mar y Sol team grew its roots in the island of Madagascar. It is not difficult to spot the beauty and uniqueness of this island reflected in these artisans’ exquisite handmade crafts. The artisans draw inspiration and materials from their environment. Dying, looming, and sewing raffia sourced from trees growing in Madagascar’s forests, these artisans are able to transform the material into well-made hats and handbags. To embellish their products, the artisans use organically tanned leathers and fallen wood taken from the forests to craft buttons and handles. Mar y Sol’s creative use of sustainable materials shows of its innovation and resourcefulness, and especially highlights the importance of the island’s forests to the community. Support for this organization not only enables artisans to gain economic independence and preserves traditional craft, but also promotes environmental conservation.
